Career Story from China: Huiming Guo's journey from toolmaker to leader

Huiming Guo, the Production Manager at Fibox China, has been part of our team since 2018. With a background in toolmaking and a bachelor’s degree in business administration, he has built a strong foundation in injection molding and production management. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, photography, and traveling, activities that inspire his creativity and provide a fresh perspective also in his professional life.

Overview of Fibox Guangzhou

Fibox Guangzhou provides comprehensive solutions for industrial plastic EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) clients, offering end-to-end services from product design and raw material selection to mass production. The factory's expertise covers various manufacturing techniques, including injection molding, printing, gasketing, Riveting/PEM (press-in fasteners), laser marking, die-casting, heat welding, ultrasonic welding, and customized assembly.

Currently, Fibox GZ manages over 1,347 products and 807 tools within its ERP system, serving industries such as medical, electronics, energy, consumer electronics and RFID. Fibox GZ stands out in global supply, quality assurance, on-time delivery (OTD), sustainability and its ESG mission.

As the head of Fibox GZ’s operations, Huiming oversees all aspects of production management, ensuring safety, cost efficiency, process improvements, sustainability, facility maintenance and ESG commitments. My key objective is to maintain our sustainability and competitiveness while aligning with ESG principles and social responsibility, which further enhances our competitive edge.

A passion for Injection Molding

With nearly 20 years in the injection molding industry, Huiming has developed a deep passion for this field. His career began as a toolmaker, where he gained hands-on expertise in mold design and production processes. Over time, his technical skills, combined with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, paved the way for leadership roles.

Overcoming challenges has been my greatest motivation, and I deeply admire Fibox’s culture of innovation and teamwork, he reflects. His commitment to continuous improvement and problem-solving has been a driving force throughout his career.

Joining Fibox was a pivotal moment in my career. It provided a fantastic opportunity to deepen my knowledge of injection molding and transition from a technical role into production management, he says. He values the complexities of overseeing operations and enjoys working alongside a dedicated team at FGZ.

Driving continuous improvement

Since joining Fibox in 2018, Huiming has played a key role in driving operational efficiency, optimizing costs, increasing profitability, and improving on-time delivery (OTD). I am proud not just of a single project but of the continuous improvements we have achieved.

One of his proudest achievements was the enhancement of the double-head laser marking machine. In 2018, the CCU23 cycle time was 85 seconds, with a post-process laser marking output of 528 units per shift. By optimizing tools and parameters in 2019, the cycle time was reduced to 48 seconds. In 2020, a process was developed to integrate the laser marking (LAS) process with injection molding (IM), optimizing the LAS marking output to 1,800 units per shift.

In February 2022, through the Quality Manager Crystal He’s Six Sigma Belt project, Huiming and his team implemented process improvements, automation, and Six Sigma methodologies. As a result, the cycle time was reduced to 38 seconds, increasing output to 2,200 units per shift. This advancement not only improved efficiency but also resolved a major bottleneck in material flow and OTD.

Overcoming challenges

In production management, challenges are always present – planning, on-time delivery (OTD), yield rates, costs, and customer satisfaction all require constant attention. Huiming and his team have addressed these challenges by optimizing processes, standardizing documentation, maintaining accurate databases, and streamlining workflows.

Huiming is especially grateful to his team and manager Mr. Pasi Pietarinen for their unwavering support. Even during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, when supply chains in China were disrupted, office colleagues stepped in to support production, demonstrating remarkable teamwork and resilience.

He emphasizes the importance of teamwork for smooth workflows and highlights the role of open communication: I ensure that my team has access to relevant data and facts rather than just stories. Open discussions help us identify improvement measures together. He also believes in proactive leadership, encouraging employees to take initiative and drive improvements independently.

Looking to the future

Moving forward, Huiming is focused on advancing FGZ’s production processes towards smart manufacturing. Although workforce shortages continue to pose challenges, he remains confident in the team’s adaptability and commitment to driving Fibox’s quality initiatives. Continuous improvement is the soul of our team, he affirms, emphasizing the crucial role of innovation in ensuring long-term success.

When asked about his advice to future leaders, Huiming emphasizes the importance of perseverance and continuous learning: Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Stay committed, remain curious, and never stop improving. He also encourages young professionals to be proactive and open-minded in their careers, always seeking ways to refine processes and contribute to the success of their organizations.
